Collection: Sock yarn
All sock yarns are fingering weight, but not all fingering weight yarns are sock yarns. "Fingering" refers to thickness - it's also known as 4-ply or Weight 1. "Sock" refers to fingering weight yarns that have a blend of fibers designed to improve wear while also being soft, comfortable, and usually machine washable.
Most sock yarns use nylon or polyamide for strength, durability, and elasticity, blended with merino wool for softness and warmth. Some also have cashmere in them to make them even softer. They're also usually more tightly spun than standard fingering weight yarns to reduce premature wear and felting.
You can substitute sock yarn for fingering when it comes to sweaters, cowls, shawls, and other garments, but proceed with caution when substituting 100% merino fingering for sock yarn. It'll likely wear through at the heels and toes much more quickly.
