Fishermen's Wool is a 100% natural wool yarn known for its warmth and durability. This medium-weight yarn is perfect for knitted and crocheter sweaters, hats, scarves, and even felting projects.

Wool fiber has natural water-resistant properties that make it ideal for outdoor garments, and you can even hand dye it for custom colorways.

Please note: Birch Tweed has slightly different details than the other colorways:

  • Fiber content: 90% wool, 7% acrylic, 3% rayon
  • Skein: 348yd / 318m, 6oz / 170g

Our notes

After making a few of our own projects with this thread, here's what we've found:

Rustic texture: While we still consider this yarn wearable for most people, it's still on the rustic side and may be prickly to those sensitive to it. When knitting, it's smooth and pleasant to work with and doesn't irritate the hands of anybody here.

Slightly splitty: With certain crochet stitches and a long-tail cast-on for knitting, we found Fishermen's Wool to be a bit splitty if you're not paying attention.

Thoroughly felt ends to join: As with all non-superwash wool yarns, you can simply felt ends together to join without any knots. Make sure to overlap and mingle at least 1" or 3cm of fiber, dampen, and thoroughly felt to ensure a secure and strong join.

Smells like lanolin: August's cats love this yarn, especially when he's blocking swatches and sweaters. It doesn't smell like the less desirable bits of barnyard, but there is a noticeable lanolin scent to the yarn. Perfect for a little fiber arts aromatherapy, if that's your jam.

Works up smoothly and evenly: In all of the crafts we used to swatch this yarn, it worked up with a consistent, smooth, and even texture. This is a workhorse yarn, and it's worthy of a spot as a stable in your stash.

Affordable and good value: These 8oz / 227g skeins are a bargain for the amount of wool you're getting. It's reliable, consistent, and a great way to dip your toes into wool without breaking the bank.

On the lighter side of worsted: This isn't thin enough to qualify as a DK weight, but it's on the lighter side of standard worsted-weight yarns. When planning colorwork, you might not want to pair this with a heaver worsted, but a heavier DK should work fine.
